One Dead, Four Injured In I-680 Crash

May 10 (AP)A 13-year-old girl is dead and three others sustained major injuries when a SUV overturned on Interstate Highway 680 Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The SUV, in which four children and four adults were riding, overturned approximately three times on northbound I680 around 4:13 p.m., Sunday when a BMW swerved into its path the CHP reports. The 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe swerved to avoid the BMW, overcorrected and fishtailed. It then overturned ejecting at least three of the occupants before landing on its roof and right side.

One of the ejected occupants, a 13-year old girl, sustained fatal injuries.

A 7-year-old boy was transported by air to Oakland Children's Hospital, a 38-year-old woman was transported by air to John Muir Hospital and a 35-year-old woman was transported by air to Eden Hospital, all with major injuries.

Three other occupants were injured and 48-year-old woman was taken to Eden Hospital with moderate injuries while a 10- and 13-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.

The CHP reports that the whole incident started when a gray or tan van merged left directly in front of the black BMW, which had to swerve left to avoid it. The van did not stop at the scene and is still outstanding, according to the CHP.
