Missing family featured on CBS' 'Early Show'

March 6, 2007 The story of three local children who authorities said were kidnapped last summer was featured in a segment of CBS' "The Early Show" Monday meant to generate tips from the public on their whereabouts. Each week, the CBS drama "Without a Trace" profiles a real missing person at the end of the show, which is followed the next morning with a segment on "The Early Show." As CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella reported during Monday's show, 15-year-old Crystal Mendoza, her half-sister Karen Aguilar, 11, and half-brother, Jesus Aguilar Jr., 6, disappeared from Ingleside more than seven months ago. FBI officials have said 34-year-old Atiana "Connie" Aguilar, the children's mother, picked them up from a Child Protective Services caregiver for visitation on July 14, 2006, and never returned. In March 2006, a court order issued in San Patricio County granted legal custody of the three children to Child Protective Services after Aguilar's husband, 48-year-old Jesus "Jesse" Aguilar Sr., was convicted of two counts of indecency with a child in connection with molesting his stepdaughter Crystal. He failed to appear at his sentencing on July 21, 2006 - several days after the three children went missing, and the couple later were charged with kidnapping. Atiana Aguilar also faces one count of interference with child custody, according to the FBI's Web site. Got a tip? CRYSTAL MENDOZA, 15, AND TWO HALF-SIBLINGS

Fifteen-year-old Crystal Mendoza told police in Texas that her stepfather had molested her. He was about to go to prison for it. Now, they're both missing, along with her mother and two other children.

As CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella reported on The Early Show, Mendoza, her 11-year-old half-sister, Karen, and 6-year-old half brother, Jesse, vanished from Ingleside, in the Corpus Christi area, seven months ago.

Police say the children's mother picked them up for a weekend visit and never returned them to their foster home. Now, Connie Aguilar and her husband, Jesus "Jesse" Aguilar, are wanted for kidnapping.

Social worker Katrina Boldin, of Child Protective Services, says the state put the children in foster care a year ago after police charged Jesus Aguilar with molesting his step-daughter.

In her statement to police, Mendoza said the abuse had gone on for four years.

"She had made comments about the fact that she hadn't spoken out before because of threats that he may hurt her mother, her siblings," Boldin says, "and anybody who is going to make threats, you have to believe that they are going to carry them out."

The family disappeared just days before "Jesse" was due in court to be sentenced as part of a plea bargain.

Connie Aguilar was born and raised in Mexico, and the FBI thought that's where it would find the family, but so far, investigators have turned up few promising leads on either side of the border, Cobiella says.

"I think this case will be broken based on a tip from the public," Special Agent Albert Holl told Cobiella.

He added, "This is a situation where we think that the fifteen-year-old child could be in physical danger."

A concern, Cobiella adds, that grows with each passing day.
